Some might say that my obsession with makeup and skincare might be a bit unhealthy, monetarily speaking. But I find that it has helped me grow and mature as a young woman. I have found that learning more about cosmetics has motivated me to take better care of my body and explore ways to express myself. For my January Beauty Favorites 2018 post, I will be taking a look at some of the products that I’ve used and loved.
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned since falling in love with makeup is that skincare is the basis of all good makeup application. As cliche as this sounds, a person’s face is a canvas. If a canvas is all wrinkled, bumpy, dry, or oily, then applying makeup will be much more difficult to apply. Not only that but having poor skin can really affect one’s self-esteem. As someone who suffered from horrible acne since a young age, I have found that taking care of my skin has really helped me gain more confidence and has really helped me improve my makeup application.
Bottom line is: no matter how young or old you are, it is important to take care of your skin.
It’s the biggest organ and the one that usually stands out the most. Some problems we can’t always fix, but that doesn’t mean that we should give up on trying to take care of ourselves as much as possible.
With all of that being said, here are some skincare items that I’ve grown to love!
Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay Mask
I first heard about this face mask from my sister. She sent me a Boldly video where a number of people with different skin problems used this mask every day for about a week or two. If you’d like to look at that video for yourselves, I’ll leave it right down below.
<iframe width=”560″ height=”315″ src=”https://www.youtube.com/embed/B_ttufiJc4g” frameborder=”0″ allow=”autoplay; encrypted-media” allowfullscreen></iframe>
I was a bit suspicious when I first heard about this mask. I’ve unfortunately grown into the habit where I assume that expensive products yield greater results. This is why I was so surprised when I found that this mask greatly reduced the size of my pimples in a matter of days. Most of the time, it takes about a week or two, if I’m lucky, for a huge pimple to go away. But after a couple of sessions with the Aztec Clay Mask, I found that the pimples around my mouth and on my chin shrank to about half their size the next day.
The best part? IT’S ONLY ABOUT EIGHT-EIGHTY ON AMAZON! AND YOU GET ABOUT A POUND OF PRODUCT!!!
I’m not lying when I say that I think this product is incredible! When I finish using this mask, it looks like the blackheads on my nose have disappeared. I also love how it smoothes out all the texture on my skin.
Overall, if you’re going to buy one thing from this list, I would definitely recommend this item.

The Water Cream
I’m currently in a phase where I feel that I need to try out as many expensive, luxury skincare items as I can. You may ask yourself, why would I do such a thing?
Well, because I feel like it, plain and simple.
And although I said that you don’t have to drop a lot of money to get good skincare, this is definitely an item that I would buy over and over again because I love it so much.
The Water Cream is a, well, cream that is targeted towards people with oily skin. According to Sephora, it is meant to reduce dryness, decrease the size of pores, and fix dull skin and uneven texture. It is also cruelty-free, which is a huge plus for me.
To use The Water Cream, wash and tone your face. Then, using the golden spoon on the cap (yes, A GOLDEN SPOON), scoop a little bit of the product, place it wherever you feel your skin needs some moisture, and rub-a-dub-dub.
Aside from the extravagant packaging, one of the things I absolutely adore about this moisturizer is how lightweight it feels on my skin. Unlike other moisturizers I’ve tried, The Water Cream never feels like it’s clogging my pores. This cream makes my skin feel so cool and refreshed, whereas a lot of other moisturizers make my skin feel sticky and oily.
The Water Cream by Tatcha costs sixty-eight dollars. I understand that a lot of people might find this to be too expensive, especially when you get 1.7 ounces of product.
I didn’t think it was possible for me to love a moisturizer, but now it’s finally happened and I don’t think I’ll ever be the same. So if you’re someone who’s looking to spoil themselves or a loved one with a little luxury, I think this would be a great item to check out. You can buy The Water Cream at Sephora by clicking here.
Urban Decay Meltdown Makeup Remover Dissolving Spray
One of the most important, yet underrated parts of skincare is the removal of makeup. Having good skin requires that you remove as much makeup from your face at the end of the day. I used to use the Clinique Cleansing Balm to remove all of my makeup, but I absolutely hated how sloppy it felt to slather the product all over my face and hands.
Thankfully, the Urban Decay Meltdown Makeup Remover Dissolving Spray has saved my life and sanity.
Unlike the Clinique Cleansing Balm, I do not have to lather a bunch of product all over my hands then apply it onto my face. Instead, all I do is spray the product directly onto my face and neck. I then feel a slight tingling sensation as the spray dissolves all the makeup on my face, allowing me to take off layers and layers of makeup with just a few makeup wipes. I’m honestly amazed at how well it does at melting away the makeup from my skin. Whenever I go to clean my face afterward, my brush and cotton balls barely pick up any leftover product. It also doesn’t make my skin feel dirty and slimy.
The Urban Decay Meltdown Makeup Remover Dissolving Spray is 1.0 and 3.8 ounces for the mini and full versions. The mini version costs twelve dollars while the full one sells for twenty-six. I believe it is also cruelty-free.
Although I do think it would be nice to have more product for the price, I still think that this is a cool item to try out, This is just one entry in Urban Decay’s Makeup Meltdown skincare line, so I hope that I’ll be able to get my hands on some of the other products in the future.
If you’re interested in buying the Urban Decay Meltdown Makeup Remover Dissolving Spray, feel free to check it out at Sephora.
Glam Glow #GlitterMask
A face mask that has ACTUAL GLITTER IN IT?
This particular face mask is supposed to help fix “loss of firmness and elasticity” is supposed to be “lifting, tightening, and toning” for your skin. It is also a face mask that is meant to be peeled, not rubbed off.
I’ve used this face mask a few times now, and although I haven’t noticed any added brightness to my skin, I do love how it helps my skin feel so clean. When I peel this mask off, my pores look smaller and the blackheads on my nose are almost gone. I also love how the glitter doesn’t scratch my face in the slightest.
But most importantly, this mask is just so much fun!
I’m definitely looking forward to using more of this! The sixty-nine dollar price tag can be a huge turn off if you’re someone who’s more frugal than I am. At the same time, I think that if you’re someone who’s really into facial masks or is looking for something that really tightens your face and helps get rid of blackheads, then I think this could be a great item to check out.
You can purchase the Glam Glow Glitter Mask off of Sephora by clicking on this link to Sephora. I swear, I’m not sponsored by them!
Korres Greek Yoghurt Foaming Creamy Cleanser
The Korres Greek Yoghurt Foaming Creamy Cleanser is a cleanser that is meant to help with dryness and redness, and is formulated with “real skin-nourishing Greek yogurt.”
I’m not gonna lie, I originally bought this because of Manny MUA’s skincare routine video. But what he says about this product is so true! This does a beautiful job of cleaning my skin while making sure that it isn’t stripped of moisture. A lot of cleansers I’ve used tend to make my skin feel tight as if someone is pulling on it, whereas this makes my face feel clean and refreshed. Of course, I also love how the product goes from a creamy to a foamier consistency as you mix with water.
Oh, and I forgot to mention that this product is cruelty-free!
Thankfully this product doesn’t cost too much at only twenty-six dollars. At least when I’ve compared it to some of the other items I’ve listed so far. So if you want to get the Korres Greek Yoghurt Foaming Cleanser, check it out at Sephora.
Thayers Alcohol-Free Unscented Witch Hazel Toner
I honestly forgot how I found this product. I think I was looking for a toner that didn’t have any alcohol since it allegedly makes your skin look older. But I’m not one-hundred percent sure on that fact.
Anyways, I find that this product is a pretty nice toner, especially when you consider its thirteen dollars and twenty-five cents price tag. It feels refreshing on my skin, and it seems to be helping me keep the blackheads on my nose at bay. And of course, it’s cruelty-free.
Overall, I’m very glad that I’ve found this product. Now I’m just wondering if the scented versions have any different effects on the skin?
The Thayers Alcohol-Free Unscented Witch Hazel Toner can be found on Amazon.
Tatcha Camellia Gold Spun Lip Balm
How fucking extra does a person have to be to get a lip balm WITH GOLD IN IT?
Well, that person in question is me.
This lip balm, as expensive as it is, is pretty amazing.
It’s so moisturizing and the gold flecks make me feel like a queen. But for thirty dollars, would I make this a frequent purchase? Probably not. But do I love it? Hell yes. I’d recommend this for people who are looking to try something new or spoil their loved ones with something extravagant. You can purchase the Camellia Gold Spun Lip Balm off of Sephora.
Now we can move on to my favorite part!
Once upon a time, I used to never wear makeup
I know, that’s kind of ridiculous, right?
But once I wanted to learn how to make my eyeliner stay on all day, my obsession with makeup grew. So, here I am today, with a full drawer of makeup, constantly obsessing over what new products. Some would call my collection the result of an unhealthy obsession that is draining what little money I currently possess.
And honestly, I’d agree with them.
But until reality swings a baseball bat into my face, waking me up to more frugal senses, I will continue lurking on Sephora’s website and see what I can get my pizza-plastered hands on. Here’s what I’ve used and loved so far.
Tarte Shape Tape Concealer
Perhaps it wasn’t the best idea to list a Tarte product, considering the recent Shape Tape Foundation controversy. While I do wish that Tarte would get their shit together and create a larger shade range, I still adore their Shape Tape Concealer.
I had heard so many beauty influencers across social media declaring their love for this product. At first, I wasn’t sure what all the hype was about. Everyone claimed that this concealer was full coverage and practically erased the phrase “creasing under eyes” from human language. Once I tried it, I fell in love.
I absolutely love the way it practically erases the dark circles under my eyes. But another thing I love is how well it works as an eyeshadow primer. I’ve used the MAC Painterly Paint Pot, Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion, and a couple from Kat Von D Beauty; alas, none of them have worked. My eyeshadow would still fade away after a couple of hours, melting into the creases fine lines. But once I used the Tarte Shape Tape Concealer on my eyes and setting it, the eyeshadows looked wouldn’t fade.
I haven’t tried many concealers out since I’ve started getting serious about makeup. Honestly, I’m not even sure if I want to try anything else at this point.
(Knowing me, I will probably try about fifteen concealers after this, because who am I kidding?)
If you are interested in purchasing the Shape Tape Concealer, you can get it for twenty-seven dollars on Tarte’s site.
Too Faced Natural Eyes Palette
If you haven’t read my review on this palette, feel free to go check it. Or not, that’s fine too.
While it does have its flaws, I still think this is a great palette. The pigmentation is nice and allows me to build up the color intensity. It’s also a nice palette to bring out for special occasions where you don’t want to be over the top.
If you want to start experimenting with eyeshadows, the Too Faced Natural Eyes Palette is a great palette.
Everything from Sugarpill
If you’ve been following me on Twitter, you’ve probably heard me mention this brand more than a few times. That’s because I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS BRAND.
I’m not joking when I say that I’ve yet to find a product from Sugarpill that I don’t like. I love their eyeshadows, their bullet lipsticks, their new Liquid Poison lipsticks, their eyelashes, and their shader brush. I just love how pigmented every product is, as well as how much thought is put into their packaging. Honestly, I can’t think of any other brand that makes bullet lipsticks as cute as Sugarpill’s.
I was also fortunate enough to be able to buy the palette from their recent collab with Little Twin Stars. The colors are so beautiful, unique, and easy to blend. Seriously, if you’re tired of all the neutral eyeshadows on the market, then this palette is definitely worth checking out.
Again, I love everything I have ever tried from Sugarpill. I cannot wait to see what other products they come out with.
Yes, their products can be a bit pricey, but not much pricier than most indie makeup brands. Their collection of Liquid Poison lipsticks cost eighteen dollars apiece, while their pressed eyeshadows cost ten to sixteen dollars. The Little Twin Stars collab costs seventy-nine bucks all together. You can get the palette for thirty-eight and the liquid lipstick duo for thirty-six dollars separately. You can find all of these products on Sugarpill’s official site.
ABH Moonchild Glow Kit
There are not enough words I can say about the Anastasia Beverly Hills Moonchild Glow Kit.
Do you want to look like you’re literally from another planet? Are all the other highlighters on the market too basic for your tastes? Are you someone that likes to layer on so much highlight that the moon starts quaking? If you answered yes to any of those questions, then this glow kit could be for you!
In all seriousness, I absolutely love the formula of this highlighter palette. Although it is a bit glittery, the colors go on smoothly and blend beautifully into my pale skin. Some of the shades look like they’d leave a dark streak. Thankfully, they end up being so flattering, giving my skin a mystic glow.
Out of all the shades, I’d have to say that “Blue Ice” is my absolute favorite.
Kat Von D Shade and Light Contour Palette
There really isn’t too much I can say about the Shade and Light Contour Palette. There was a time where it gave me a little bit of trouble. Now I feel that this palette and I have come to really respect one another.
I just love how this palette has all sorts of shades to choose from. Whether I want a more natural contour or something more dramatic, this palette blends nicely into my skin. I have much to learn in the ways of contouring and highlighting, but I think that this has been a great tool to use! The packaging is also divine and really captures that gothic style Kat Von D is known for. It’s just so satisfying to run my fingers over the raised lettering on the cover.
Oh, I forgot! It’s also refillable, so I’m glad that I won’t have to repurchase the entire product again if I run out of one of the shades.
Storybook Cosmetics Wizard Wand Brushes
One thing I’ve been kicking myself for lately is how I didn’t appreciate the Harry Potter books when I was younger. My grandparents would buy my sister and I a copy of the latest book as soon as it was released. Thankfully, I have now landed on the Hogwarts Express train and have joined the fandom.
In fact, I have become so obsessed with Harry Potter that these Wizard Wand Brushes by Storybook Cosmetics are perhaps my favorite eyeshadow brushes of all time.
The craftsmanship of these brushes is incredible. Unlike most makeup brushes, these have a little bit of weight to them. They also slightly resemble some of the famous wands from the Harry Potter franchise. Most importantly, the synthetic bristles are so soft to the touch. I never feel like I’m jabbing hay onto my eyelids when applying eyeshadow. Granted, at fifty-five bucks, these are a bit pricey, but the quality speaks for itself.
If you want to give a unique gift to a loved one, or to the Harry Potter fanatic in life, then these brushes are definitely worth a look. You can check out these brushes, and other items, on the official Storybook Cosmetics website.
Luxie Beauty Wonder Woman Brush Collection
Wonder Woman is perhaps the most empowering, inspiring movie I have seen lately. The story of Wonder Woman is so iconic, and frankly, I found it outrageous that Harley Quinn got a movie before her.
But does Harley Quinn have her own signature line of makeup brushes?
The minute I saw that Luxie Beauty came out with a set of Wonder Woman-inspired brushes, my impulsivity took control of my senses. Soon enough, this set landed at my house and in my hands.
After using them a few times, I find that these apply foundation and concealer beautifully. I still love my Beautyblender, but I notice that these brushes allow more product to be spread around. They also leave little to no streaks on my face, and like the Storybook Cosmetics brushes, they’re incredibly soft. Honestly, I don’t think I will ever part with these brushes because they’re absolutely amazing.
If you’re looking for high-quality face brushes, or want to display these as decoration, then I’d highly recommend the Wonder Woman Brush Collection. You can purchase it off of Luxie Beauty.
Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminzer
It seems like everybody and their mother is coming out with a makeup brand. When I heard that Rihanna was coming out with her own makeup line, I was intrigued. I’d heard so much about how inclusive her shade range was, but I’d heard mixed reviews on some of her other products.
However, I have to say that the Gloss Bomb is perhaps the best lip gloss I have ever used.
The first thing I notice is that it smells like a cupcake, which appeals to the foodie aspect of my personality in an almost erotic manner. The color is also beautiful and allows the natural hue of my lips to peer through. Lastly, it feels thick, but not to the point where it feels like I’m wearing a sticky paste. Instead, it feels slick and moisturizing. I definitely would love to purchase this product again when it runs out!
That concludes my January Beauty Favorites 2018 post.
I’m very grateful that I was able to try out so many amazing products. I realize that a lot of the items I’ve listed here are expensive, so I hope to try out some more amazing items that are more affordable.
